The Starry Starry Night socks mean a lot to me. First, they were designed by a very good friend of mine, Suzanne. Secondly, the yarn was hand dyed by another good friend of mine, Cindy (Tenacious Fibers).

I have to say that I love the pattern...and the yarn is so cushy... this pair keeps my toes very warm (not hot)...and I need them in the 20 degree weather we've been having.

Hubby braved the cold this morning and took off to an auction. He brought a few 'goodies' home.

One is a "bowl" from the Cambridge Glass Company. The Cambridge Glass Company closed in 1954. I wish I knew what it was made for...you know...what function did it have...or was it just to sit pretty on a table or mantle...hmmm. It is pretty and I think I'll keep it.

Time for me to go knit...I'm still working on the Edge Addiction (making long sleeves and turning it into a cardigan); Eliza's blanket (yes, I know she will be 2 years old in February); Worsted Weight socks (knitting these on U.S. Size 3 needles is slow work). Or I could just go cast on another project...or sew on a project...

Lilacs 4 Angelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01212723243483517393noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623870830905317560.post-25590720737308220562014-08-02T12:50:00.000-07:002014-08-02T12:50:26.954-07:00A bit of "Addiction"Yes, you heard me right... "Addiction"

A fellow knitter and mentor of mine has designed the most delightful top. We are members of a knitting guild... What The Knit in Bakersfield and can be found on Ravelry as well. Suzanne never fails to amaze me. Her "Edge Addiction" can be as colorful as one wants it to be. The yarn being used is sock weight and has long color repeats.

The Modular Top is being test knitted as we speak (err..read). I feel blessed to be one of the lucky test knitters.

I am using Schachenmayr Regia in the Snowflake color.

I am doing 4 'strips' on the left and right front and the same on the back.

I have mentioned it to Suzanne that I would probably get more use out of the top if we could 'alter' it to a cardigan. Suzanne has said that she will work on that. I am so excited to see what she comes up with.

I will try to get a good photo of the finished right side but for now check out Suzanne's page...the little modular squares are so addicting to knit.

Happy Knitting everyone...and stay tuned

I finished the Ribwarmer and love it. I wear it every chance I get.

Progress on the old cabinet is coming along nicely. I bought a new scraper and it is the best. Layers of paint come off so easily. We haven't moved it to the garage yet. It is still in the basement and I'm still stripping...just doing it a bit at a time.

Sock Madness 8 has started. Participants had to be signed up by the end of February. The pattern for the first round was released Monday morning. I can say that I successfully completed my pair of Brucie's around midnight Thursday. Participants are given two weeks to complete the pair of socks in the first round. Those who have shown a reasonable effort will be eligible for the rest of the patterns during Madness but they will not move on to the next round.

Today I started another endeavor. My daughter and I visited a fabric shop. The shop is located in the basement of one of the owners. The owners are a delight and we enjoyed visiting with them. I came away with more than enough fabric to sew a quilt.

....hmmm some would say that my plate is overflowing... I would say that I'm just getting started.Lilacs 4 Angelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01212723243483517393noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623870830905317560.post-72437784870894516282014-01-14T19:09:00.003-08:002014-01-14T19:09:49.512-08:00big cityWe went to the big city today...

love the old houses and the wonderful architecture...

I was stripping my new hutch down in the basement. Unfortunately I have had to stop for a bit. I have it set up not far from our furnace. I really don't want to blow the place up with the stripper fumes. It will be best to wait until the weather is a bit warmer and we move everything up to the garage.

Progress on my EZ Ribwarmer was stalled.

Using my measurements and the gauge I'm getting on my swatch cast on numbers and increases numbers will differ from the original pattern. That is because the Ribwarmer is being knitted to fit me...not everyone else.

I'm back on track now and gartering along...

Using US size 6 needles I am knitting mine with Anzula yarn, Cricket, in Olivia colorway...a beautiful green. If you've never used Anzula yarn it is more than worth trying. Sabrina does a fantastic job of dyeing her yarn. The yarn is so buttery soft. I love it.

and

On another note...I have taken on a humongous project. I am refinishing a beautiful to me old hutch. It came in two pieces with original hardware, chippy paint all over and two glass doors.

I spent the better part of today stripping the paint, should I say layers of paint, from the top of the hutch.

I do hope everyone is safe...

We've done a bit of rearranging of furniture and unpacking a few boxes today. Now it's time to take a break.

I washed a blanket that hubby had picked up somewhere for Shivers (as if he doesn't already have enough blankets). When I was folding it I saw the label. I find it quite ironic that the blanket was made by the Faribault Woolen Mill Company, here in the USA. The label very clearly states that is is 100% ACRYLIC.

The ironic part ~ a WOOLEN MILL manufacturing ACRYLIC blankets.

I think I will do a bit of research on the company. I'd like to know why they made acrylic (plastic) blankets instead of Wool blankets.

We moved the cedar chest from one room to another. Before moving it we made sure it was empty. It was full of our youngest daughters Care Bears from the early to mid 80's.

Think it's time to go knit a bit....

See you all later.... Lilacs 4 Angelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01212723243483517393noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8623870830905317560.post-28451314182569895622013-12-31T10:41:00.002-08:002013-12-31T10:41:16.096-08:00A look over the past yearSo much has happened over the past twelve months...but that is another story.

Today I am looking over the knitting projects I've completed. There is a story behind each of my projects but we're not going there.

so...

In November of 2012 I joined a knit a long with members of the local Knitting Guild where I lived at the time. We chose a pattern and proceeded...thankfully we were led by a Master Knitter. I can say that every member of the group learned so much through the process.

We started by taking precise measurements of our bodies. Yeah, not fun, but very necessary. If you are making a garment that you want to fit, the only way is to have precise measurements. Having this information saves so many tears and grief.

So, first project ~ Dark and Stormy ~ pattern by Thea Colman...pattern was adapted to fit us...I used Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 in worsted weight.

Then came Sock Madness...yes it is madness...

Sockdolager socks ~ pattern by Adrienne Fong

Flying Dutchman socks ~ pattern by Caoua Coffee

Greenhouse socks ~ pattern by Anita Grahn

Then I knitted a second pair of socks for Brenda. She was a favorite postal carrier.

The "What The Knit" Knitting Guild in Bakersfield, California was blessed to have a sock workshop. Our teacher was Angela Davis. We had so much fun.

I knitted a wee sock...using leftover sock yarn...wonderful...this was for a Summer Knit along...

After hubby and I relocated to the mid-west we were informed that I would definitely need a hat to keep my head warm. After perusing patterns I decided on Cabled Rangoli Hat ~ pattern by Desi Knitter. I used natural/undyed cormo yarn from Elsa Wool Company...love the yarn. After being told that the hat made me look like a baker I decided to knit it again.

This time I used Cascade 220 Tweed in blue. I love it! I've worn it several times. My head stays warm, never hot.

On Ravelry I am in a group that I just love. The designer, Meagheen Ryan is astonishing! She designed little baby mittens...not just any baby mittens....ADVENT baby mittens.

24 Advent Baby Mittens....In finishing them I crocheted a chain and attached them as I went so they are in no particular order.

Now, those are all my finished projects for the past year.

(sorry, photos will be posted later...computer is acting up)

I decided to only do what I needed to do.??and that did not include unpacking any one of the forty or so boxes in the garage or any of the hundreds in the basement.

Quite some time ago I 'found' a recipe for garlic-lemon Chicken. This is a crockpot dish. Hubby loves it, especially when I make mashed potatoes. It is a very easy dish and I felt today was a good day to make it.

Then I spent the day going through my knitting projects.

One of our little granddaughters takes dance lessons. Last evening I cast on a pair of leg warmers. Today I knitted a bit on the leg warmers.
This last leg had some twists and turns but we are now on the next leg.

As many of you know hubby and I pulled up our California stakes, after 37 years, and relocated to a small town in Missouri.

It will take us some time to get acclimated to not just the weather but also the culture. Our new town has a small Walmart and an independent grocers. There are antique shops and boutiques, a cafe and a town center park with a gazebo, a country diner and of course two Chinese restaurants and a Mexican restaurant.

We are in our new home, finally, after much cleaning and painting. New carpet and vinyl tile in the baths...

We are home.

Our new home has three bedrooms, two and a half baths, and a full, unfinished, usable basement with walk out to the backyard. Off the kitchen is a sun porch. When the weather warms Shivers will probably spend the majority of his day on the sun porch.

So as not to overwhelm anyone I will post just a few photos.

so much has happened in our lives...

It'll take time to get caught up...

In the meantime...

We were blessed with another beautiful granddaughter this past February.

Hubby and I packed up and relocated from California to Missouri.

I knitted another sweater...

Each year they go to a farm that has a maze, a petting zoo, food and drink, hayride, and of course pumpkins. This year our youngest granddaughter, who is 13 months, had a blast. She had boots but the place was so muddy (it was a bit rainy all day) that she would have been falling down and that wouldn't have been much fun.

Okay, so I was browsing Pinterest earlier this week. I came across a scrumptious looking 'recipe', shall we say. So, taking their start I came up with my own version.

Grilled mushrooms and garlic...then I grilled, in the same pan, a roll (sort of like one you'd use for french dip ~ hubby bought the pack and I wasn't going to say anything. The "original" used a chibatta.)

Then after I put the mushrooms and garlic on the bread I sprinkled, with a flourish, some grated gouda cheese...yummy!

Today I washed my handknitted socks...hand wash....I love the smell of the wool when it is wet. When I knit socks I use wool, sometimes mixed with nylon, bamboo, alpaca, cashmere...never acrylic.

And now they are out soaking up a bit of sun...
Sweet little one joined a big brother and the family was complete.
Until...

We were informed earlier this summer that we were being blessed by another grandchild.

Now I don't mind it...

Usually...

TODAY ~ Our youngest daughter is celebrating her birthday today...no, I won't tell you how old she is. She is a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, and sister. (Just a few of her titles). Happy Birthday sweetie

EARLIER THIS WEEK ~ Our grandson plays freshman football for his high school. The season is almost over and he was looking forward to the participating on the wrestling team for the first time. It seems that he won't get that opportunity. At the football game Monday he tackled an opponent and when he landed on the ground he landed on his finger. Our grandson that is. After a trip to the ER and xrays...he broke the bone, right above the knuckle on his index finger. So yesterday a trip to the hospital was in order to have pins inserted. I don't think he was a happy camper.

EARLIER THIS YEAR (RECAP) ~

I once again participated in Sock Madness...knitted socks like a mad woman. It was fun and I learned new techniques which is always a joy.

In July some of my siblings and I, along with some nieces and nephews, got together. It had been 7 years since I'd seen some of them and longer for others. Two cousins also met us ~ we hadn't seen them for over 50 years. We had a great time and quite a few went home with sock madness socks.

NOW ~

Our eldest daughter is gracing us with another grandchild shortly after the first of 2013. She gave us a granddaughter last year and that little girl turned her mommy and daddy's worlds upside down. She is just as cute as can be. She turned 1 in September; started walking around 8-9 months and is into everything. She sure livens their home up and they love. She joined an older brother last year when she was born and he lovingly dotes on her.

I'm knitting...and knitting...and knitting. I've been knitting socks; knitted a beautiful shawl (that I need to reblock); and now I'm knitting matching hats for the 1 year old and her mommy. And I've cast on today to knit a swatch. Swatch! Swatch for what? A sweater! Yes, I'm ready to knit another sweater.

And, if that isn't enough, a wonderful group of knitters and crocheters have started a Guild! I am looking forward to the education that comes with being associated with a Guild.

Time for lunch and then some knitting!

What is Sock Madness, you ask?

Well, it is an international sock knitting competition.

You must be registered in order to compete.

We receive the first pattern during the first few days of March.

Competitors must knit the socks according to the pattern. It is permissable to add extra stitches to make the socks larger but we can not deviate from the pattern. In this way all competitors are knitting close to the same number of stitches.

The first round we are given two weeks to complete the pair of socks. Those who complete the pair will move on to the second round.

All who make it through the first round are divided into groups depending upon the number who make it. Last year we had four teams. The teams are usually based upon a competitors degree of knitting. Those who are very experienced are put on one team while those who are beginners are put together on one team.

Sock patterns start out fairly easy and get increasingly more complex.

After each round fewer competitors move to the next round until there is one person from each team in the last round.

This year the first sock is Dicey. The instep and leg is a 4x2 rib. But every fourth row we must roll the dice to see if the 4-stitch rib will have a cable or not.

Casted on February's pattern ~ "The Beaches of Donegal"

For both patterns I'm using Periwinkle Sheep Yarn...love this yarn, it is so nice to work with, and so soft.
Today hubby and I went downtown to the Library. Set up in the library's parking lot is "The Wall That Travels". We saw it two years ago when it came to town. It's just as moving to see this Wall as it is to see the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D. C.

On our way we made a detour and stopped at Creative U Studios in Santa Clarita.

I found this little shop to be well stocked with a good selection of yarn, needles, notions.

Additionally, the shop sells fabric and items for quilting.

The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Stop by the shop in person or check out their website where you can order items to be shipped to your destination.

This is a "local yarn shop" that I will definitely visit when I am in the area.

I bought chances in a very worthwhile raffle a group in Ravelry was holding.

So many wonderful prizes were donated for the raffle.

I won what I call a Roasted Pumpkin Trifle (love my trifle dish and thought it a perfect display piece).

Three Skeins! ! ! ! Beautiful yarn from Periwinkle Sheep

The yarn is for knitting a beautiful shawl

I had a heavenly experience last night that I will savor forever.

Wonderful!

It's great to feel wonderful!

I have a full day ahead of me and for once I'm looking forward to seeing my accomplishments.

Since last post....

We have welcomed a new granddaughter into our family.

Emma ~ she is so precious ~ I had to good fortune to spend a month plus with her and her brother (they live in another state). She is so tiny and at 3 1/2 months she is still tiny. She's such a happy little girl.

Well, I have a door to paint...ta ta for now

I woke for the first time in months with little pain. That in itself makes for a lovely day in my world.

I know so many of my 'friends' don't understand what I go through on a daily basis. And that is okay. It's not for them to understand. It's for me to live with.

On a lighter note...I am knitting when I am able.

I have a shawl on the needles, almost finished, that is beautiful. I love the design and the yarn. It's a special pattern designed by a special friend.

Also on the needles are two pairs of socks. One is a test knit so I won't discuss that project.

The other socks are coming along just great. The cuff and leg portion are taken from a pattern in a knitting magazine. The heels are Cat Bordhi's Sweet Tomato Heel. I love this heel and will use it again. If you want more information on this heel you'll have to look her up. She has a wonderful e-book out.

My energy level is dwindling so I'm off to recharge...

May God Bless You and Yours
